A King's Indian line in which Black meets White's modest e3 and Be2 setup with 6...Nc6, developing the knight actively to back the ...e5 break.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Hollywood Variation
The Hollywood Variation is Black's alternative to the usual 6...Nbd7 in the Semi-Classical Variation. The knight goes to c6, where it adds pressure to d4 and supports ...e5 more directly than from d7. The cost is that it blocks the c-pawn, so the Benoni-style ...c5 break is no longer readily available and Black's central play depends on ...e5. The knight on c6 also gives White a target. The engine lists 7. d5 among its top choices, gaining space and a tempo by driving the knight away, although in practice this is not among the common replies.
White most often castles with 7. O-O, completing development before deciding how to handle ...e5. The prophylactic 7. a3 and 7. h3 are far less frequent, and 7. a3 has scored poorly for White in online play. The engine gives White a slight edge. Results are close to even, with Black winning marginally more often than White, and the position is a modest sideline rather than a main theoretical battleground.
