A rare Damiano Defense sideline in which Black answers 4. Nf3 with 4...d5, giving up a pawn for open lines. Engines judge White to be well ahead.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Chigorin Gambit
Black declines the knight on e5 with 3...Qe7. After the retreat 4. Nf3, Black plays 4...d5 in place of the usual 4...Qxe4+, leaving White a pawn up in return for open lines and a half-open e-file. The queen on e7 and the pawn on f6 still hinder Black's kingside development, and the engine rates White's advantage as large. By far the most common reply is 5. d3, which supports e4. The variation is rarely seen.
