An unsound Latvian Gambit sideline in the Mayet Attack: Black ignores the threats with 4...Nf6 and offers a rook for a fast, trappy attack.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Corkscrew Countergambit
The Corkscrew Countergambit, 4...Nf6 in the Mayet Attack, develops a piece and allows the most common reply, 5. Nf7, which forks queen and rook. Black continues 5...Qe7 6. Nxh8 d5 and hopes for 7. Bb3? Bg4. After that, White faces a strong attack. The answer 7. Be2 leaves Black without enough for the rook. A quieter option is 5. Bf7+ Ke7 6. Bb3, which strands Black's king on e7. Engines give White a large advantage, yet Black scores well on Lichess.
