Train it in TheoriaAbout the Reversed Rat
The Reversed Rat, 1. d3 e5, is Black's most direct answer to the Mieses Opening. White's modest first move leaves the center open, and Black takes it at once with the king's pawn. After 1...d5, it is the second most common reply to 1. d3. Because White has committed only one pawn one square, the position stays fluid, and most continuations transpose into familiar openings, frequently with colors reversed.
The most popular answer, especially in amateur play, is 2. e4, which leads to the Leonardis Variation of the King's Pawn Game. It gives White a share of the center, but the pawn on d3 keeps the f1-bishop shut in. 2. c4, the engine's preferred move, reaches a line normally reached through the English Opening, 1. c4 e5 2. d3. White controls d5 and can bring the queen's knight to c3 without obstructing the c-pawn. 2. e3 is the second most frequent choice in practice.
2. Nf3 develops while attacking e5. Black cannot chase the knight with 2...e4, because the d3-pawn covers that square. 2. g3 addresses the bishop problem by fianchettoing it; on the f1-a6 diagonal, d3 limits the bishop to e2. 2. Nd2, the Valencia Opening, is less orthodox because it blocks the c1-bishop. It still brings the knight toward the center, and the bishop can later go to b2 after b3. In online games White scores somewhat better after 2. Nd2 than after the other main moves. 2. d4 produces a Scandinavian Defense with colors reversed, so any Scandinavian structure becomes available to White a tempo up.
The engine rates the position after 1...e5 as roughly balanced. Online results are close to level, with Black marginally ahead, and decisive games are the norm. The line is among the more frequently reached of the named irregular openings. Since White can steer toward the English, a reversed Scandinavian or a King's Pawn structure, theory specific to the Reversed Rat itself is thin. The character of the game depends mainly on which transposition White chooses.
