About the Polish Variation

The Polish Variation answers 1. b3 with 1...b5, a two-square advance of the b-pawn that gains queenside space and prepares ...Bb7 to dispute the long diagonal, rather than staking out the center. Because the b5-pawn rules out most transpositions, play stays in independent territory. White nearly always continues 2. Bb2, and scores well from this position; engines give White a slight edge, with central moves such as 2. e4 and 2. e3 among their preferences.
