Train it in TheoriaAbout the Marshall Gambit
The Marshall Gambit is White's most direct answer to the queen on d5. Instead of defending d4 with 4. Nf3 or 4. c3, White develops the queen's knight with tempo and leaves the d-pawn unprotected. The pawn is under attack from both the queen and the knight on c6. White's compensation is development and the chance to harass the black queen on the open central files. Most players accept with 4...Qxd4, and in practice Black scores well in that line. The engine also prefers the capture, rating the gambit as a slight edge for Black.
Black has two main alternatives. Retreating with 4...Qd8 declines the pawn but loses time, and White scores clearly better after it. The move 4...Qa5 also declines the pawn and keeps the queen active on the a5-e1 diagonal, a placement familiar from the Scandinavian Defense. The engine lists 4...Qf5 among its choices as well. Overall results are close to even, with Black slightly ahead, and the line appears mostly in faster online play.
