About the Smith Gambit

The Smith Gambit arises when White meets the Owen Defense's 2...Bb7 not by protecting e4 with 3. Bd3 or 3. Nc3 but by developing with 3. Nf3, leaving the pawn to the bishop on the long diagonal. White's idea is to trade the e-pawn for quicker development and for chances to gain time against the bishop once it lands on e4. Taking the pawn with 3...Bxe4 is both Black's most frequent reply and the engine's first choice, and the engine regards Black as slightly better after it, so the gambit is not considered objectively sound.

Black is not obliged to accept. The quiet 3...e6 is the second most common answer and keeps a French-like setup available, while 3...g6 heads for a double fianchetto. Despite the engine's verdict, results on Lichess are almost exactly even, with very few draws, which points to an unbalanced game in which practical chances outweigh the theoretical assessment. The line is mainly a club-level and online surprise rather than a mainstream treatment of 1...b6.
