An offbeat Owen Defense line in which Black combines ...f6 with a queenside fianchetto against a broad White center; engines favor White clearly.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Unicorn Variation
The Unicorn Variation arises from the Barnes Defense order 1. e4 f6 2. d4 b6 3. c4 Bb7 and is classified under the Owen Defense. Black's bishop targets e4, but the early ...f6 takes the natural square from the king's knight while White holds pawns on c4, d4 and e4. Engines give White a clear advantage. The usual replies are 4. Nc3, guarding e4, and 4. d5, which blocks the long diagonal, with 4. Bd3 a less common option. The line is rarely played.
