About the Krause Variation

The Krause Variation arises from the Mason-Showalter setup of the Classical Attack after 7. O-O Be7 8. Re1 Bg4 9. c3 f5 10. c4. White first spends a move on c3 to support d4. Once Black anchors the e4 knight with ...f5, White pushes on to c4 to strike at d5. The f5 pawn holds the outpost but loosens e6 and the a2-g8 diagonal. The usual reply, 10...Bh4, eyes f2 and leads to the Maróczy Variation.
