The Millennium Attack, 5. Bd3, develops the bishop before d4 and hits the e4-knight at once. Black most often retreats with 5...Nf6, though 5...d5 and 5...Nc5 are also common. The bishop blocks the d-pawn, so White typically plays c3 and drops the bishop back to c2 before pushing d4, as in 5...Nf6 6. O-O Be7 7. c3 O-O 8. Bc2 Bg4 9. d4. It is a rarely played sideline, and engines rate it roughly balanced.
