Train it in TheoriaAbout the Lion Variation
The Lion Variation arises when Black meets 3. d4 Nf6 4. Nc3 by defending e5 with 4...Nbd7 rather than 4...Nc6, which would allow the pin 5. Bb5. The resulting setup, completed by ...Be7, ...O-O and often ...c6, keeps the pawn on e5 and the central tension intact. Typically White castles short and looks for play on the queenside, while Black holds the center and waits for the right moment to release it. Many players reach it via 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 e5 to avoid the queen trade after an early dxe5.
The most common reply is 5. dxe5, followed by 5. Bc4 and 5. d5. After 5. Bc4 Be7, the f7-square becomes a target: 6. Bxf7+ is the Bishop Sacrifice, and 6. Ng5 O-O 7. Bxf7+ Rxf7 8. Ne6 is the Forcing Line, while 6. O-O h6 belongs to the Lion's Claw complex. The Shirov Gambit, 5. g4, offers a pawn; if Black accepts, White gets the half-open g-file. Engines give White a slight edge, although Black scores slightly better in the database.
