A dubious Philidor Defense sideline in which Black meets 3. d4 with 3...Bd7, leaving the e5-pawn to White in return for development.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Philidor Gambit
The Philidor Gambit, 3...Bd7, answers 3. d4 with a quiet developing move. It neither exchanges on d4 nor adds a defender to e5, so the pawn is in effect left for White to take. Most often White accepts with 4. dxe5. Less frequent are 4. d5, which closes the center and gains space, and 4. Bc4, which aims at f7. Engines judge White clearly better, and White scores well in practice.
