About the Schiffler Attack

The Schiffler Attack, 3. e4, claims the center immediately instead of preparing it with e3 or c4. The pawn is indirectly protected, since 3...Nxe4 opens the long diagonal to 4. Bxh8. That defense lasts only until ...Bg7, which is by far the most common reply, so White soon needs a real defender for e4. The other main option is 3...d6. Engines give Black a slight edge, while online results are evenly split.
