About the Quiet Line

The Quiet Line is the Queen Pterodactyl form of the Pterodactyl Defense, reached after 1. d4 g6 2. c4 Bg7 3. Nc3 c5. White declines to set up the full c4-d4-e4 center and plays 4. e3 instead. This guards d4 a second time, so a capture on d4 can be met by a pawn recapture, and White keeps a solid base against the g7-bishop's pressure on the long diagonal. The cost is that e3 shuts in the c1-bishop. Because d2 is still empty, a queen move to a5 would still pin the knight on c3.

The most common reply by far is 4...cxd4, chosen in about three-quarters of games, which clarifies the center at once. Developing moves are the main alternatives: 4...Nf6 is the next most frequent, and 4...Nc6 and 4...d6 also occur. The engine rates 4...Nf6 and 4...d6 alongside the capture. The engine evaluation is close to equal, and results in online play are almost evenly split between the two sides, with very few draws.
