A Queen's Gambit Accepted line in which White checks with 4. Qa4+ to regain the c4 pawn at once; rare, since Black equalizes without difficulty.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Mannheim Variation
The Mannheim Variation recovers the gambit pawn by force: 4. Qa4+ checks and hits c4, and Qxc4 follows. Waiting until Nf3 and ...Nf6 are played makes it more popular than the Accelerated Mannheim, 3. Qa4+. The name recalls its use at Mannheim, a 1934 World Championship venue, though the move was known earlier. Black equalizes easily with 4...Nc6, and 4...Bd7 and 4...c6 are also common. Michał Krasenkow and Ulf Andersson have played it.
