About the Smyslov Variation

The Smyslov Variation of the Queen's Gambit Accepted, 4...g6, departs from the classical 4...e6. Black fianchettos the king's bishop, where it bears on d4 along the long diagonal and backs later pressure against White's center. White nearly always regains the pawn at once with 5. Bxc4, while 5. Nc3 is a less frequent alternative. The line is seldom played, and the engine assesses the position as a slight edge for White.
