A Lasker Defense line of the Queen's Gambit Declined in which Black meets the queen sortie 11. Qb3 by defending the d5-pawn with 11...Qd6.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Bernstein Variation
The Bernstein Variation arises after the minor-piece exchanges typical of the Lasker Defense. White plays 11. Qb3 to put pressure on d5 and along the b-file, and Black replies 11...Qd6, covering the d5-pawn with the queen. In the resulting structure White has an isolated a-pawn and a half-open b-file, while Black has a half-open e-file. Black can instead answer 11. Qb3 with 11...Rd8, which leads to the Mar del Plata Gambit after 12. c4 Be6.
