The Teichmann Variation of the Lasker Defense arises after 9. Qc2. White develops the queen to a square that eyes the knight on e4 and covers c3, so an exchange there can be met without damage to the pawn structure. Black nearly always trades with 9...Nxc3. The alternatives 9...f5, which bolsters the knight, and 9...c6 are occasional. The engine rates the position roughly balanced, and the line is seldom seen.
