A quiet Queen's Gambit Declined line where White meets ...dxc4 with 5. e3, preparing to regain the pawn with Bxc4 rather than build a big center.

About the Quiet Variation

After 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5 4. Nc3 dxc4, the Vienna Variation usually continues 5. e4, where White takes the center at once and accepts long-term structural risks. The Quiet Variation replaces that with 5. e3. White opens the f1–a6 diagonal so that Bxc4 can recover the pawn without disturbing the pawn chain. The game then moves toward Queen's Gambit Accepted territory, with less forcing play than the main line. White's pawns stand on d4 and e3, and Black keeps a solid e6 pawn and the option of ...c5 against the center.

Black's most common answer is 5...Bb4, which pins the c3 knight as in the Nimzo-Indian before the pawn is recaptured. The quieter 5...Be7 is the next choice, and 5...a6 prepares ...b5 to make regaining the pawn harder. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced and lists ...c5 and ...Be7 among Black's best tries alongside ...a6. In practice White scores somewhat better, mostly in the 5...Bb4 lines.
