Antal Defense

The Antal Defense, 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nd7, departs from the usual 2...Nf6 by bringing out the queen's knight first. The knight on d7 supports a later ...e5 against White's center and leaves the king's knight undecided, so Black can choose ...Ngf6, a kingside fianchetto or another arrangement after seeing White's setup. The cost is a temporarily blocked c8-bishop and a cramped position. Because Black has not yet attacked e4, White can build the center without being hurried.

The most frequent reply is 3. Nc3, followed by 3. Nf3 and 3. c4. The engine prefers 3. c4, which seizes more space before Black organizes ...e5, and also rates 3. f4 and 3. Nf3 highly. It gives White a slight edge overall. In online play the line performs well for Black, and White's and Black's wins occur at the same rate. The position is reached often enough to rank in the upper tier of named openings, though it stays a sideline beside the main Pirc and Modern paths.
