A rare gambit in the Ruy Lopez Classical Variation in which White offers the b-pawn with 4. b4 to deflect Black's bishop from c5 and gain central time.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Spanish Wing Gambit
The Spanish Wing Gambit, 4. b4, offers the b-pawn to lure the bishop away from c5. White hopes to gain time for the c3 and d4 advance, an idea reminiscent of the Evans Gambit. The gambit is rarely played. Accepting with 4...Bxb4 is the most common reply, 4...Bb6 declines the pawn, and 4...Nxb4 captures with the knight instead. Engines give Black a slight edge, although practical results are nearly even and draws are uncommon.
