The 8. a4 Anti-Marshall in the Closed Ruy Lopez: White sidesteps the Marshall Attack by pressuring b5 along the a-file, leading to strategic play.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Anti-Marshall
With 8. a4, the most popular way to avoid the Marshall Attack, White exploits the a-file pin: axb5 axb5 would leave the rook on a8 hanging, so Black must address b5. Engines consider the position roughly balanced. The sharpest and most common reply is 8...b4, closing the queenside and denying the knight c3, typically met by 9. d3 d6 10. a5 Be6. The quieter 8...Bb7 guards the rook and invites 9. d3, while 8...Rb8 cedes the a-file. Garry Kasparov used the line frequently.
