The Basque Gambit is a branch of the Center Attack, 6. d4, in the Closed Ruy Lopez, also known as the Spanish Game. After 6...exd4 7. e5 Ne4, White does not regain the d4-pawn at once. Instead, 8. c3 offers material to open the c- and d-files and speed up development while the black knight stands advanced on e4. The usual reply is 8...dxc3, accepting the pawn.
