About the Zaitsev System

The rook move 9...Re8 in the classical main line of the Closed Ruy Lopez (Spanish Game) is mainly a route into the Zaitsev Variation. After 10. d4, by far the most common reply, Black chooses between 10...Bb7, the Zaitsev proper, and 10...h6, the Smyslov Variation. Moving the rook early leaves f7 sensitive to 10. Ng5, which lets White steer toward a draw by repetition. The rarer 10. a4 also occurs. Engines give White a slight edge.
