A sharp line of the Schliemann Defense where Black answers 7. Nxc6 with 7...Qg5, hitting g2 and the b5-bishop amid a pending discovered check.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Classical Variation
The Classical Variation is the main branch of the Dyckhoff complex. Black allows the discovered check and counters with 7...Qg5, which attacks both g2 and the bishop on b5. The usual answer, 8. Qe2, guards the bishop and strikes at the e4-pawn. The discovered checks are less dangerous than they look, because ...c6 is available in reply, and 8. Nd4+ c6 9. Bf1 achieves nothing. Engines give White a slight edge, while practical results are close to even.
