A rare Scotch Game line in which Black meets the Potter Variation's 5. Nb3 with the check 5...Bb4+ instead of retreating the bishop to b6.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Romanishin Variation
The Romanishin Variation is the principal alternative to 5...Bb6 in the Potter Variation of the Scotch Game. Instead of keeping the bishop on the a7–g1 diagonal, Black checks with 5...Bb4+, making White commit before development is complete. The usual reply is 6. c3, after which the bishop most often retreats with 6...Be7. 6. Bd2 and 6. Nc3 are the other options. The line is seldom played, and the engine rates the position as roughly balanced.
