About the Gurgenidze Variation

The Gurgenidze Variation arises when Black meets the Maróczy Bind with 5...Nf6 instead of 5...Bg7, then trades knights after 6. Nc3 Nxd4 7. Qxd4 d6. The exchange relieves some of Black's lack of space, and the queen on d4 can be hit by ...Bg7 with gain of time. White's main choices are 8. Be2, 8. Be3 and 8. Bg5. The engine gives White a slight edge, but Black scores marginally better in practice.
