Dragon Sicilian line, reached via the Classical Sicilian, in which White plays Be3 and Qd2 before castling and keeps the option of O-O-O.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Amsterdam Variation
The Amsterdam Variation arises from the Classical Sicilian move order, with White playing 7. Be3 and 8. Qd2 before deciding where the king goes. Delaying castling keeps O-O-O available and lines up queen and bishop on the c1-h6 diagonal. Black most often castles with 8...O-O. The engine prefers 8...Ng4, which hits the e3-bishop and scores better for Black, while 8...Nxd4 is a less common option. The engine rates the position roughly balanced.
