In the Byrne Variation, Black meets the Main Line 9. Bc4 with 9...a5 instead of the usual 9...Bd7. The pawn gains queenside space and prepares ...a4 against a king castled long. The line is rarely seen. White most often continues 10. O-O-O, and 10. g4 and 10. h4 also appear. The engine prefers 10. a4, which fixes the pawn, and assesses White's position as clearly better.
