About the Gufeld Gambit

The Gufeld Gambit arises after 5. c3 e5 6. d4. White breaks in the center before Black has finished developing. Both black c- and e-pawns can take on d4, so after the exchanges Black can win a pawn, and White gets open lines and quicker development in return. 6...cxd4 is by far the most common capture, and 6...exd4 is the main alternative. The line is seldom played. White scores well in practice, while the engine rates the position as roughly balanced.
