Slav Defense line in which White meets the Chebanenko's 4...a6 with 5. c5, gaining queenside space and leaving Black to prepare ...b6 or ...e5.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Advance System
The Advance System answers 4...a6 with 5. c5, seizing the weakened b6-square, gaining queenside space and ruling out ...dxc4 and ...b5 ideas. Black must prepare a break with ...b6 or ...e5. Theory favors 5...Nbd7, which supports either. In practice 5...Bf5 is played more often, developing the bishop before the knight blocks it, and 5...g6 prepares a fianchetto. Engines give White a slight edge, though results are close to even.
