About the Bogoljubow Variation

The Bogoljubow Variation arises from the Classical Variation after 9. Bg5 Be6 10. Rc1, when Black answers with 10...c4 rather than releasing the tension with ...cxd4. The d5–c4 chain gains queenside space and keeps the isolani off the board. The cost is that the pressure on d4 disappears and d5 becomes a fixed point. White's g2-bishop, the Bg5 pin and the half-open e-file all bear on it, and the pawn chain can be challenged from the side.
