Raptor Variation, Hergert Gambit

The Hergert Gambit is a sharp follow-up to the knight-for-bishop trade in the Raptor Variation. After 3...Nxg5 4. hxg5, the reply 4...e5 strikes at d4 at once and leaves the e-pawn en prise. In return Black hopes to use the bishop pair against White's doubled g-pawns. Two replies are equally common: 5. dxe5, accepting the pawn, and 5. g6, a counterthrust on the kingside. Both score well for White. The engine gives White a slight edge.
