The Pierce Gambit, 5. d4, ignores the threat of ...g4 and occupies the center instead. The usual course is 5...g4 6. Bc4 gxf3, after which White plays 7. O-O or 7. Qxf3 for activity in return for the piece. The position also arises via 5. Bc4 g4 6. d4 or from the Quaade Gambit of the King's Gambit. Black's main alternative is 5...d6, while 5...Bg7 has a weaker reputation. The engine gives Black a clear advantage.
