Black's quiet 5...d6 in the Steinitz Gambit of the Vienna, freeing the c8-bishop and holding the extra pawn while White's king stands on e2.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Paulsen Defense
The Paulsen Defense, 5...d6, meets the Steinitz Gambit with a modest central move. It opens the diagonal of the c8-bishop and covers e5, whereas 5...d5 strikes at White's center at once. White nearly always answers 6. Nf3, gaining time against the queen. 6. Nd5 is a rarer try. The few recorded games are close to even, and the engine also rates the position as roughly balanced.
