Vienna Gambit line in which 5.d3 challenges Black's centralized knight at once, leading to sharp play where Black usually exchanges on c3.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Modern Variation
The Modern Variation, 5. d3, attacks the centralized knight at once instead of developing with 5. Nf3. The knight has no good retreat square, so Black normally exchanges with 5...Nxc3, by far the most common reply. The aggressive 5...Qh4+ scores poorly for Black in practice, and 6. g3 Nxg3 7. Nf3 Qh5 8. Nxd5 is the Würzburger Trap. The rare 5...Bb4 has given Black good results, and the engine slightly prefers Black.
