About the Wurzburger Trap

The Würzburger Trap arises when Black meets the Modern Variation, 5. d3, with 5...Qh4+ 6. g3 Nxg3, relying on the pinned h2-pawn. After 7. Nf3 Qh5 8. Nxd5, White threatens Nxc7+. The natural 8...Na6, among the two most common replies, loses a piece to 9. Nf4 Qh6 10. Ne2. The alternatives are 8...Nxh1 and 8...Bg4. The engine rates the position as balanced, but White scores heavily in practice. The trap is named after the banker Max Würzburger.
