Dutch Defense line in which Black meets the kingside fianchetto with ...d5, forming the f5-e6-d5 Stonewall chain that clamps down on e4.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Stonewall Variation
With 6...d5 Black completes the Stonewall chain on f5, e6 and d5, gaining a firm hold on e4 at the cost of a hole on e5 and a passive light-squared bishop. This is the traditional form with the bishop on e7; the Modern Stonewall, with ...d5 played earlier and the bishop on d6, has since become more popular. White's main replies are 7. Nc3, the Botvinnik Variation 7. b3 aiming for Ba3 to trade dark-squared bishops, and 7. cxd5. Engines give White a slight edge.
