A rare branch of the Allgaier Gambit in which White follows the knight sacrifice on f7 with 7. d4, building a pawn center against Black's exposed king.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Thorold Attack
The Thorold Attack is White's alternative to the Urusov Attack's 7. Bc4+ after the knight sacrifice on f7. Instead of giving check, 7. d4 places pawns on d4 and e4 and opens the c1-bishop's diagonal toward the f4-pawn, with play aimed at the uncastled king on the half-open f-file. Engines give Black, a piece up, a large advantage. 7...d5 is the most common reply, and 7...Nf6 and 7...f3 are also suggested. The line is rarely played.
