About the Brentano Defense

The Brentano Defense meets the Kieseritzky knight with 5...d5. Rather than guarding g4, it strikes at e4 and seeks to open the center for Black's pieces while White's king remains loose. The most common reply is 6. exd5, followed by 6. Nxg4. After 6. d4 Nf6 7. Bxf4 Nxe4 8. Nd2, the line is known as the Caro Variation. The defense is rarely played, and engines assess the position as balanced.
