About the Romanishin Variation

The Romanishin Variation, also called the Fianchetto Variation, answers the pin with 4. g3, aiming the king's bishop from g2 at d5 and e4 in the manner of the Catalan. The difference is the knight on c3: it cannot drop back to d2 to regain a pawn on c4, so 4...d5 followed by ...dxc4 is regarded as Black's most testing reply. Castling is the most popular choice, and 4...c5 5. Nf3 leads to lines also reached via 4. Nf3. Engines rate the position as level.
