About the Check Variation

The check 5...Bb4+ targets the dark squares weakened by 5. b3. The natural 6. Nbd2 runs into 6...Bc3 7. Rb1 Bb7, when the threat of ...Be4 wins material, so White answers with 6. Bd2 in almost every game. Black then chooses between the Intermezzo Line, 6...Be7, where 7. Bg2 c6 8. Bc3 d5 leaves White's bishop blocking the c-file, and the Modern Line, 6...Qe7. The engine rates the position as roughly balanced.
