This completes minor-piece development while leaving open both kingside castling with f4–f5 and the Velimirović setup with Qe2 and O-O-O. Black usually answers 7...Be7, with 7...a6 and 7...Bd7 less common. The Sherbakov Variation, 7...Be7 8. Bb3 O-O 9. O-O Na5 10. f4 b6, targets the b3-bishop.
