A rare gambit in the Tarrasch Defense where White strikes at d5 with 5. e4, an idea tested by Frank Marshall; the engine rates it as balanced.
Train it in TheoriaAbout the Marshall Gambit
The Marshall Gambit is a rare sideline of the Tarrasch Defense in which White meets the recapture 4...exd5 with 5. e4, attacking the new d5-pawn at once instead of developing with 5. Nf3. Frank Marshall tested the idea. Black most often accepts with 5...dxe4, leaving White a pawn down in exchange for open lines and quick development. 5...cxd4 and 5...Nf6 are the main alternatives. The engine rates the position as balanced, and practical results are close to even.
