About the Classical Defense

The Classical Defense is the core position of the Torre Attack. It arises when Black meets 2. Nf3 with 2...e6 and White pins the f6-knight with 3. Bg5. Because ...e6 already frees the dark-squared bishop, Black has a wide choice of replies. The most common is 3...d5, which builds a Queen's Gambit Declined structure and lets White transpose to that opening. Nearly as frequent is 3...Be7, which breaks the pin quietly and keeps Black's options open. The direct 3...c5 strikes at d4 and leads to the most forcing lines. These include the Wagner Gambit, 4. e4, and the Petrosian Gambit, 4. e3 b6 5. d5, in which White pushes the d-pawn forward as a pawn offer. The Nimzowitsch Variation, 3...h6, asks the bishop at once whether it will retreat or capture on f6. It is played less often but has given Black the best practical results of the main replies.

The engine assesses the position as balanced, and overall results are close to even. This fits the Torre's reputation as a low-risk system rather than a route to an opening advantage.
