Train it in TheoriaAbout the Big Center Variation
The Big Center Variation follows the Classical Defense with 3. e4. White builds a pawn center on d4 and e4 straight away instead of developing with 3. Nf3 or 3. e3. Because 2...e6 opened the d8-g5 diagonal, the f6-knight is pinned to the queen, so White threatens to gain space and harass it with e4-e5. Black has to deal with the pin before starting counterplay against the center.
The usual answer, chosen in well over half of games, is 3...Be7. It cuts the diagonal and allows a calm buildup in which Black later challenges the center with pawn breaks. 3...h6 puts the question to the bishop. White must then retreat or exchange on f6, and the exchange gives Black the bishop pair. 3...d5 strikes at e4 at once and leads to French-style central tension. The engine also favors 3...c5, which hits d4, and the modest 3...d6. It rates the position as equal, and online results are close to even, with a small plus for White.
