About the Bardeleben Variation

Against the Paulsen Attack, 5...f5 defends the e4-knight with a pawn. This parries White's threat of Nxe4 dxe4 Qxe4, though it loosens Black's kingside. White most often challenges the knight with 6. d3. The en passant capture 6. exf6 is the second choice, and 6. d4 leads to the Heyde Variation. The engine considers the position roughly balanced, and Black scores slightly better than White in online games.
